What is nepenthes nigra?

Nepenthes nigra is a species of pitcher plant native to the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is a climbing plant that grows up to 10 meters long and produces large pitchers that can hold up to 1 liter of fluid. The pitchers are dark purple-black in color and have a distinctive narrow waist.

Like other Nepenthes species, N. nigra is carnivorous and uses its pitchers to trap insects, which are then digested by enzymes produced by the plant. N. nigra grows in acidic soils in lowland forests and is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation. It is also heavily collected for the horticultural trade. As a result, it is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
